COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. â UTC golfer Steven Fox's bid to repeat his 2011 Tennessee Match Play Championship was ended in the semifinals on Friday by University of Memphis sophomore John Luke Tyner, who then proceeded to win the title.
Fox and Tyner squared off in a morning semifinal match at Spring Creek Ranch and Tyner prevailed, 1-up. In the other semifinal, former Tennessee-Martin golfer Bailey Childress of Memphis defeated Tennessee Golf Hall of Famer Tim Jackson, 1-up.
That pitted the two West Tennesseans in the finals, and Tyner claimed another 1-up victory and the championship.
Tyner is well known is state golf circles. In 2010, he shot 7-under-par 65 in the final round to win the state AAA high school championship. That same year he placed second in the Tennessee Junior Amateur with scores of 65-71.
Fox had been playing exceptional golf of late, having helped lead the Mocs into the NCAA Championships in May with a course-record 64 in the Bowling Green (Ky.) Regional. In June, Fox shot rounds of 68-66-134, 10-under par at the Harpeth Hills Golf Club in Nashville, to claim the low qualifying score for the U.S. Public Links, which will be played on the Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah on July 9-14.
