Girls Inc. of Chattanooga is now accepting nominations for the ninth annual UnBought & UnBossed Awards.

The award is named for the phrase coined by groundbreaking congresswoman and 1972 presidential candidate Shirley Chisholm.

The UnBought & UnBossed Awards recognize Hamilton County women who, through their career achievements or community leadership, have had a significant impact on improving the lives of girls and women. Nominees must be women who have demonstrated that they are "determined, intelligent and audacious in [their] beliefs"—words Chisholm once used to describe herself.

The nomination process is open to the public. The 10 honorees are chosen by the 10 girls participating in Girls Inc.'s Women's History Project—each girl selecting the nominee who inspires her the most. The selection takes place through a blind process where nominees' names and other identifiable information have been removed. The girls interview their chosen honorees, as well as family members and colleagues, and then recognize them with a special presentation about each woman's life at the UnBought & UnBossed Awards Breakfast in March. Past participants have written speeches and poetry, designed original art, and delivered video or slideshow presentations honoring the women they selected.

The deadline for nominations is Oct. 31.
