The Chattanooga women’s soccer team was shut out by visiting Tennessee Tech on Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium.

Despite outshooting the Golden Eagles 14-10, the Lady Mocs were defeated 2-0.

“This is a great lesson for us,” said UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer. “We are not panicking. We are going to go right back at it the way we have been and we will be fine.”

Tennessee Tech’s Andrea Melloff gave her team a one-goal advantage when she successfully finished off an assist from teammate Ellie Iaciofano in the third minute.

Senior Becca Smith, freshman Logan Higgins and senior Lauren Wilson all had opportunities at the equalizer for the Lady Mocs, who controlled the possession for nearly the entire first half, but none were successful.

“We possessed the ball very, very well in the first half,” said UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer. “We have five freshmen on the field, so they are all getting used to the speed and physicality if this level.

Smith had another scoring opportunity in the 21st minute, but a diving save by Tennessee Tech keeper Lauren Brown kept the Golden Eagles out in front.

Melloff fired a shot off the post following a 55th-minute break away, and Iaciofano was in place to bury the rebound and give her team a 2-0 advantage.

The Lady Mocs return to action Sunday when they host Alabama State on Sunday at Finley Stadium. The 2 p.m. match wraps up a season-opening three-game home stand.
