On the heels of a disappointing employment report, Comcast leaders are hiring for a new regional operations team.

“It’s great to be able to add so many jobs here as a demonstration of our commitment to Chattanooga and to providing excellent customer service,” Jim Weigert, vice president and general manager of Comcast Chattanooga, said in a prepared statement. “And when selecting the location, it was the strength of the local team here in Chattanooga that made the choice clear.”

Tennessee is one of 44 states that saw a rise in unemployment in July.

Last Thursday, Karla Davis, Tennessee commissioner of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, announced that the Volunteer State’s unemployment rate for July increased to 8.4 percent.

That’s up from June’s revised rate of 8.1 percent.

In an in-person interview Monday, Weigert said hiring has been going on for three or four months. The goal is to bring in 150 new people, and there are now about 80 positions open, he said Monday.

Most positions are entry level, although there may be opportunities for some supervisor positions.

The team will be called CommOps, and members will work with installation crews out in the field to oversee technicians' schedules and help them run more efficiently.

Currently, Comcast schedules most customer visits within a two-hour window, and Weigert said the goal is to close that gap even more to add convenience for customers.

Leaders have renovated and moved around at the Polymer Drive office to make room for the additional employees.

“We are committed to making the right investments in people, advanced technologies and new processes to ensure customers receive the best possible experience each and every time they call Comcast,” Elaine Tapp, Comcast regional senior director of CommOps, said in a prepared statement.

Weigert said that Comcast leaders are looking for people who are “customer-focused,” are familiar with computers, have strong communications skills and are comfortable in an office environment.
