Seeing seven states and the legendary views from one location in Chattanooga have pleased visitors to the Scenic City for 80 years, but this fall, a new tour of seven rooftops hopes to offer locals a reason to take another look at the state of green building initiatives in the city.
The Rooftop Hop on Saturday, Oct. 20 is being hosted by GreenSpaces, the local initiative-turned-nonprofit started in 2008 as a resource and clearinghouse for best practices in sustainable building.
The event is the group's inaugural fundraiser, according to the new director of development, Tina Shaw Cox, who hinted at more and larger future events being planned by the organization for 2013.
The self-guided tour includes seven different destinations and culminates with a rooftop concert on top of the Bijou Theater parking deck, featuring Space Capone from Nashville and Chattanooga's WTM Blues Band opening. Four of downtown's top restaurants will be serving heavy hors d'oeuvres, and a cocktail mixologist will be serving specially crafted "fancy drinks."
Shaw Cox said locations were selected based on a synchronicity with GreenSpaces' mission and that participating venues have conversation-starting features such as live green roofs and solar decks, as well as fantastic panoramic views of the city.
Each rooftop party host will have special offerings for guests to enjoy along with the views, although details were still being worked out for each location, according to Shaw Cox.
In an effort to have a "low carbon footprint event," Shaw Cox said the group is also partnering with Bike Share Chattanooga to encourage participants to cycle their way between destinations. To accommodate the anticipated additional demand, Outdoor Chattanooga will be providing additional bikes, racks and an all-day pass to event patrons who purchase an "all-inclusive ticket."
According to the website, the all-inclusive ticket includes access to all seven roof parties, plus complimentary drink tickets to use at the main party on the parking deck. Tickets are also available just for the main party, and all are available now with special early bird pricing through Sept. 20.
Money raised from the rooftop fundraiser will be used to develop programs and support operational costs at GreenSpaces, officials said.
