The best from the first round

Junior RB George Porter, Baylor

Porter provided an early spark in the Red Raiders’ 49-35 first-round victory over Battle Ground Academy – a 97-yard touchdown run on Baylor’s first play from scrimmage – and the junior finished with 179 yards and three touchdowns on just 13 carries. Porter added his second touchdown run late in the first half and scored again early in the third quarter.

Senior RB Rance Harden, Boyd-Buchanan

Harden had a huge night in the Buccaneers’ 27-19 win over Rockwood in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs, accouting for three of his team’s four scores. The 5-10, 185-pound senior ran for 175 yards and pair of touchdowns, and he also had a 4-yard reception for a score. Harden’s finished with touchdown runs of 27 and 51 yards.

Junior QB Nelson Johnston, McCallie

The Blue Tornado didn’t throw it much in last week’s 62-20 first-round victory over St. Benedict, but when it did, McCallie was extremely effective. Johnston completed four of just five pass attempts for 160 yards, including three touchdown passes. Johnston hooked up with Eric Wolf for scores twice on Friday, and he tossed an 82-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Morgan as well.

Sophomore RB Auston Banks, Notre Dame

Banks was the man for the Fighting Irish in Friday’s 31-6 win over Hixson, racking up 140 yards and a pair of scores on 20 carries. Notre Dame, which amassed 297 yards on the ground, took an early lead on Banks’ 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and the sophomore broke a 42-yarder for a score later in the fourth.

Junior RB James McClellan, Signal Mountain

The Eagles suffered a 42-41 loss to Page in Friday’s first-round matchup, but McClellan certainly did his part for Signal Mountain. The bruising back ran for 155 yards and four touchdowns including scores of 17 and five yards in the fourth quarter.
