Chattanooga’s Jacob Huesman was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second week and a row and the third time this season on Monday.
Huesman became just the third UTC freshman to earn three weekly conference honors, joining teammate Terrell Robinson (2011) and James Roberts (1989).
Huesman completed a season-high 22 passes for 229 yards in Chattanooga’s 16-13 overtime loss at Wofford last weekend. Huesman completed nine of 10 passes for 90 yards on third down and converted them into seven first downs. The 6-1, 210-pound redshirt freshman also ran for 68 yards on 24 carries and caught one pass for five yards.
Huesman helped lead the Mocs on an 18-play, 72-yard drive that was capped by redshirt freshman Kendrix Huitt’s 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10-10 and force overtime. Huesman converted four third downs on the drive, two on the ground and two through the air.
He has already set the UTC freshman record for pass completions (154) and attempts (231). He needs 166 yards to set the rookie record for passing yards set by Kenyon Earl’s (1,643) in 1991. His 11 touchdown passes are also two shy of Earl’s freshman record.
Huesman leads all SoCon freshmen in rushing yards (79.5 ypg), rushing touchdowns (6), pass effieciency (131.8), passing touchdowns (11) and its third in the league overall offense (227.3 ypg).
The Mocs (5-5, 4-3 SoCon) host Elon (3-7, 1-6) in their regular-season finale Saturday at Finley Stadium.
