The best from the third round

Junior QB Jim Cardwell, Boyd-Buchanan

Cardwell did it all for the Buccaneers in their 35-13 Class 2A quarterfinal victory at Knoxville Grace last Friday. The 5-10, 170-pounder racked up 251 total yards and four touchdowns against the Rams. Cardwell fired two first-half touchdown passes to seniors Rance Harden and Chase Miller, and the junior also ran for two second-half scores.

Junior RB Desmond Pittman, Ooltewah

Pittman eclipsed the 100-yard mark against a stingy Columbia Central defense, and what’s most impressive is that the 5-10, 225-pounder did it in just over a half of football. Pittman racked up 101 yards on 22 carries, but injured his ankle on just the fifth play of the second half in the Owls’ 31-13 loss at Columbia Central in the Class 5A quarterfinals last Friday.

Sophomore RB Matt Melitta, East Hamilton

Melitta racked up 122 yards of total offense in the Hurricane’s 22-16 Class 4A quarterfinal loss at No. 1 Giles County on Friday, and the 5-9, 163-pound speedster was responsible for both East Hamilton touchdowns. He scored on a 57-yard first-quarter touchdown run before hauling in a 23-yard touchdown reception on a screen pass to give the Hurricanes a 14-9 advantage in the third quarter. Melitta ran for 91 yards on eight carries and finished with two catches for 31 yards.
