Mother Jones, a news magazine known for its liberal politics, offered its take on the Tennessee General Assembly Wednesday—giving it the No. 1 slot for the worst state Legislature in America.
Summarizing the rationale behind its ranking, the magazine named a handful of bills that were considered and passed in Nashville's legislative chambers last year. Included on the list were items of legislation that became known as the "saggy pants bill," the "don't say gay bill" and the "gateway sex bill" signed by Gov. Bill Haslam.
Most noted, however, was a bill sponsored by Hamilton County Rep. Richard Floyd, which would have instated a fine against transgender persons using a public bathroom or dressing room that did not match the gender provided on the person's birth certificate. Sen. Bo Watson, who initially sponsored the Senate version of the measure, later withdrew his support.
