Award-winning photographer Billy Weeks, a frequent contributor to’s sports section, has chosen his favorite sports photos of the year and posted them on his website.

Weeks, who has photographed countless sporting events in a 28-year career, has contributed to since the website’s inception in March 2011. Since leaving the newspaper business, where he began his career in 1984, Weeks has stayed busy working for the Associated Press, Reuters and the New York Times, among many others, and he also teaches photo journalism at Southern Adventist University and UTC.

In choosing his favorite sports photographs of the last 12 months, Weeks didn’t go for the obvious.

“I tried to look around the field,” he said. “I didn’t look for the most exciting moments in the game. I looked for moments that went beyond the game. In some cases, that’s the best action photo. But in other cases, it’s historic moments like the Johnny Majors photo that links to Tennessee’s past rather than its future.

“I chose the photo of the Lady Mocs celebrating (after their win over Tennessee on Nov. 9), not only for the excitement they bring, but also the fans. The fans really added to that picture.”
