The Chattanooga men’s tennis team resumes its spring schedule with a home match against Belmont on Sunday at the Hixson Raquet Club.
The Mocs are 1-1 after splitting matches with No. 63 Georgia State and Tennessee Tech last weekend. UTC suffered a 5-2 loss in its opener against the Panthers before bouncing back to beat the Golden Eagles 4-3 on Sunday.
Senior Manuel Barreotavena leads the team in singles with a 9-5 overall record. He won both of his matches at the No. 3 spot last weekend. Freshman Luke Saunders also captured a pair of singles wins, posting straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6
Head coach Carlos Garcia is still shuffling his team’s lineup early in this spring season. Seniors Chris Smith and Roberto Viera flipped between the No. 1 and No. 2 spots last weekend, and both finished 0-2.
Viera is looking to snap a five-match losing streak, which dates back to tournament play last fall. He is looking to become the Mocs’ first four-time All-Southern Conference player since Jason Ontag (2000-03).
The Bruins are 0-1 on the season after having lost their season opener at No. 19 Tennessee last Saturday. Belmont is led by a pair of seniors — Fernando Mussolini and Henrique Norbiato.
The Mocs have won their last two against Belmont, escaping with a narrow 4-3 win in last year’s home match.
