LA JOLLA, Calif. — Chattanooga senior Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) shot 78 (+6) on Friday and missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open at historic Torrey Pines. His 36-hole total of 148 (+4) was five strokes off the 1-under par (143) cut line.
Fox played the South Course on Friday after shooting a 2-under-par 70 at the North Course on Thursday. His 148 tied him with Aaron Watkins, Brandt Jobe and Matt Jones. Several big names from the PGA Tour (Keegan Bradley, Scott Stallings, Stewart Cink, John Daly, Angel Cabrera, Y.E. Yang) and recent collegiate stars now on tour (Bud Cauley, Patrick Cantlay, Kyle Stanley, Scott Langley, Morgan Hoffmann) joined Fox in missing the weekend.
“Obviously it was a great experience for Steven,” said Head Coach Mark Guhne. “We’re proud of him. He came out strong in the first 18 and got a taste of life on tour and what it takes to be successful. It’s not an easy task to make a cut and he made a good run at it.”
The Mocs and Fox beging their spring season at the Bayou City Collegiate Feb. 22-24. The tournament, hosted by Houston, is played at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Tex., site of the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open.
