The Chattanooga softball team opened the season at 1-4 at last weekend’s National Training Center Invitational in Clermont, Fla.The Lady Mocs suffered back-to-back losses on Friday, and split their games Saturday before being knocked off by Fordham for the second time in three days on Sunday morning.

The team’s only win at the event was a 6-4 victory over Long Island in Saturday’s first game before being edged by Virginia Tech 7-5 later that afternoon.

First-team All-Southern Conference first-teamer Sara Poteat batted .421 for the Lady Mocs on opening weekend. The senior had eight hits, including a triple and three doubles, while scoring a team-leading six runs.

Senior Kasey Tydingco, also an all-conference first-teamer, went 6-for-15 at the plate with two runs batted in, and freshman Jenny Garcia batted .333 with a team-high four RBIs and two runs scored.


The Lady Mocs used four different pitchers in the three-day stretch. Taylor Deason was credited with the win in UTC’s victory over Long Island, but the sophomore right-hander was also tagged with two losses. Deason gave up 10 runs off 12 hits in 12 and 2/3 innings of work.

Freshman Rachel Albritton also pitched 12 and 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs off 10 hits while striking out 15. She pitched four and 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Rams.

The Lady Mocs return to action next weekend when they travel to Auburn, Ala., for the Auburn University Tiger Invitational. UTC opens the event against Kansas on Friday at 8 p.m., and Chattanooga will also face Indiana State, Tennessee State and Auburn.
