Tuesday morning, leaders with River City Company announced the location of the first in a series of cash mobs. Today, they are encouraging local residents to shop at Sewn to the Sky.
A cash mob is when a group of people go to a small business on a designated day to make a purchase.
It's a community event driven by social media through which leaders drop hints about the store’s location in advance and announce the location on the day of the event.

“Cash mobs have been tried in cities all over the country as an innovative and easy way to support local businesses," Blair Waddell, retail recruiter for River City, said in a prepared statement. "As downtown’s economic development firm, River City Company is committed to retaining our local retailers and love to explore ways to keep our small businesses thriving, and cash mobs are an easy way to help make that happen."
River City leaders are hoping each person who visits the store will buy something worth about $20.
Leaders with the downtown economic development company are organizing cash mobs in April, June and August.
Sewn to the Sky is a downtown gift and textiles shop that features a wide range of handmade goods and art produced by local/regional artists.
"As we seek to recruit new businesses, we hope to retain the businesses we love with cash mobs and implement them all over downtown, thus bringing new customers downtown to other stores/eateries and showcasing all we have in downtown Chattanooga,” Waddell said.
