Americans were expected to spend $18.6 million on Valentine’s Day, according to the National Retail Federation, but some people will be spending money on divorces.
Feb. 15, the day after the holiday dedicated to love, is the start of the busy season for divorce lawyers, CNN reported.
AttorneyFee.com, a legal referral site, did a study of divorce filings in New York, Illinois and California and found that February is the busiest month of the year for divorce filings, with about 18 percent more than other months.
Referrals for divorce lawyers on the site increase 38 percent after Valentine’s Day, with the biggest rise on the day after the holiday, according to CNN.
Another legal site, Avvo.com, reported that there is a 40 percent increase in people seeking information and advice about divorce after the holiday.
In 2010, The Huffington Post reported that the annual cost of divorce to the U.S. is more than $30 billion, with the average divorce costing about $20,000.
In Hamilton County, the divorce rate in 2011 was 4.3 percent, and there were a total of 1,474 divorces that year, according to the Department of Health, which tracks those statistics.
In the state, there were 27,454 divorces for a divorce rate of 4.3 percent.
