The Chattanooga women’s tennis team captured its sixth straight victory of the spring on Sunday afternoon, blanking visiting UT-Martin 7-0. The Lady Mocs, playing on the outdoor UTC Tennis Courts for the first time this spring, improved to 6-0 with their school-record fifth consecutive shut-out win
Through six matches, UTC has only allowed one point. Chattanooga is 35-1 in singles action—surrendering just six sets all season—and the team is 15-3 in doubles competition.
“It was a solid effort,” Lady Mocs coach Jeff Clark said. “We played really well in singles. We were pushed in a few spots, but responded well. I think we definitely got better today.”
The Skyhawks, picked second in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll, have advanced to the OVC tournament championship in each of the last two seasons, but fell to 0-2 this spring with Sunday’s loss.
The Lady Mocs jumped out to 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point for the sixth straight match—UTC won two of the three doubles matches—as freshmen Kelsey Coots and Kayla Jones captured an 8-2 win. Senior Jenna Nurik and sophomore Kaylene Chadwell also teamed up for a doubles victory.
Coots breezed through her No. 4 singles match as well. The freshman was first off the court with her (6-1, 6-0) win over Johanie van Zyl, improving to 6-0 in singles play.
Nurik, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week, gave the Lady Mocs a 3-0 lead with her (6-1, 6-2) win over Ivon Simic at No. 1, and Chadwell clinched the match with a (6-0, 6-2) victory over Anna Marie Herbold.
Jones, sophomore Claire Mulyadi and freshman Katie Polk also won singles matches on Sunday,.
Chattanooga returns to action Thursday at UAB, and its next home match is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. against Jacksonville State.
