The Chattanooga softball team closed out the 2013 Frost Classic with an 8-0 loss to Missouri State, finishing the three-day tournament at 3-2 while moving to 7-7 on the season.
Taylor Deason, who was charged with the loss for UTC, lasted all seven innings on the mound, but the sophomore right-hander was roughed up for eight runs off 11 hits, despite striking out 10.
Deason started three games for the Lady Mocs over the weekend, but appeared in all five. She notched wins against Eastern Kentucky, Lipscomb and Miami (Ohio), while taking two losses, including Saturday’s 6-1 setback to Boston College.
The Lady Mocs’ offense was quiet for most of the day on Sunday, scattering just six hits. Junior Stephanie Rieck went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles, while seniors Sara Poteat, Ninjja Suetsugu and Kasey Tydingco, along with junior Tyler Templet, each recorded hits.
Both teams were held scoreless through three innings until Missouri State managed two runs in the fourth. A single from Kerri Cunningham led off the inning, then first baseman Stevie Pierce homered to put the Bears out in front.
Chattanooga put two runners on in the fifth with Templet’s single into left field followed by a single through the right side of the infield from Poteat, but a two-out groundout ended the inning to keep UTC off the board.
Missouri State plated three runs off six hits in the sixth, then added three more insurance runs in the seventh.
The Lady Mocs return to action Friday when they travel to Macon, Ga., to play in the Mercer University Bear Classic. Chattanooga is slated to play at least four games before entering an elimination-style tournament. UTC will face Northern Kentucky, Central Arkansas and Mercer over the three-day event.
