KNOXVILLE – Tennessee coach Butch Jones is showing that his 2014 recruiting class, ranked as one of the best in the nation, is not a fluke.
That’s because he’s building an impressive 2015 class as well and that group got a huge boost on Friday afternoon when elite 2015 linebacker Cecil Cherry of Frostproof, Fla., committed to the Vols while on a visit to Knoxville.
Cherry, a 6-0, 220-pound inside linebacker, holds one of the best offer lists in the nation for his class. That list includes Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and many others. As a sophomore, he recorded 118 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and worked as a short-yardage back for Frostproof High School last season.
Though UT will have to continue to fight for the coveted prospect’s services over the next year and a half, picking up such a highly-acclaimed linebacker this early is a great sign for Jones and linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen.
It’s a position they are light on depth at. The Vols could return as few as two or three scholarships linebackers in 2014, making the 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes essential for rebuilding the position (click HERE for more information on UT’s linebacker recruiting situation).
Cherry becomes UT’s fifth commitment for 2015, putting the Vols in second nationally behind Texas (7) for number of commitments in that year.
Tennessee's 2015 commitments:

• ATH Jaylond Woods (5-9/160/Lenoir City, Tenn.)
