KNOXVILLE – Tennessee has promoted director of student-athlete welfare coordinator Marco Harris to director of basketball operations.
The position came open after Houston Fancher departed in April to be an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington under former UT head coach Buzz Peterson.
Harris spent two years in his prior role under Martin. His primary job was to assist UT basketball players in off-the-court endeavors and he served as a liaison to other areas of the university for the basketball program. Under Harris’ leadership, the Vols have posted two of their best semesters on record in terms of team GPA.
“First and foremost, Marco is someone I know extremely well and trust,” coach Cuonzo Martin said in a release. “I know his work ethic and his character, and I see this as a role he can flourish in.
“He’s already spent two years here at Tennessee, so he’s familiar with the university’s policies and procedures. This is a great opportunity for him to grow as an administrator and serve the program in a larger capacity.”
In his new role, Harris oversees team administrative responsibilities, student staff and is responsible for budgetary oversight while working closely with the athletic department’s senior administration.
Martin has enjoyed a high level of stability in his program since arriving in March of 2011. Only two key personnel members have left Knoxville – Fancher and former basketball strength and conditioning coach Troy Wills – while his coaching staff of Tracy Webster, Kent Williams and Jon Harris has remained completely intact.
