A season four episode of "The Golden Girls" features several hilarious mentions of Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) being arrested in Chattanooga.
The episode "The Days and Nights of Sophia Petrillo" touches on themes of aging and boredom as Sophia (Estelle Getty) goes out to purchase her daily nectarine. What her housemates don’t know is that Sophia spends her time doing a variety of activities throughout the day—leading a marching band, haggling with grocery clerks and changing lives at a hospital—while the rest of the girls sit at home and recount stories.
The Chattanooga quips are at the 3:05 and 14:15 marks of the episode.
Devereaux remembers being arrested in Chattanooga for "dividing into teams and greasing her hands." Later in the episode, she tells the other girls she was also arrested in Chattanooga for "driving with her shirt off."
This prompts Dorothy (Bea Arthur) to ask, "Are you allowed to go back to Chattanooga?"
Devereaux responds: "Are you kidding? The sheriff still writes."
McClanahan received an Emmy Award in 1987 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on "The Golden Girls."
The show aired from 1985 to 1992. Betty White is the only regularly occurring cast member still alive.
