LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Chattanooga men’s basketball team captured an 87-76 win over IUPUI on Friday, concluding the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational and snapping the squad’s four-game losing streak.
Senior Z. Mason scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Mocs (3-5), who had five players finish in double-figures, while Mason and sophomore guard Casey Jones each hauled down nine rebounds in the team's comfortable win.
“Our guys did a great job today—especially on such a short turnaround like that,” UTC head coach Will Wade said. “We did a phenomenal job of following the scouting report and I thought we were in great shape. We wore them down.”
Chattanooga, which held a 12-point advantage at the break, built on that cushion early in the second half, but IUPUI battled back, capping a 16-3 run on Donovan Gibbs' layup around the 11-minute mark, trimming their lead to 58-56. The Mocs answered that run, though, outscoring their opponents 12-4 over the next 2:37 to finally seize control.
“This is one of those games where you win it in June, July and August with your training,” Wade said.”
“We really continued to fight tonight,” Mason added. “We have a really scrappy team, and we had a really great performance tonight from Casey Jones. Gee McGhee really came in and helped a lot. We had guys who kept us fresh and kept us going for a lot of minutes."
Jones and McGhee finished with 14 points each, while junior forward Lance Stokes tied a high career high with 13 points, seven boards and a blocked shot. Freshman point guard Greg Pryor contributed 13 points, five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
Ja’Rob McCallum finished with a team-high 25 points on 8 of 13 shooting for the Jaguars (1-7), while teammates Ian Chiles and Khufu Najee also finished in double figures, posting 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The Mocs return to action Monday evening with a trip to Athens, Ga., where they’ll square off against the Georgia Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum.
