The dreaded shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be overwhelming to both retailers and consumers. But a local effort seeks to establish a tradition of generosity in Chattanooga on the Tuesday following all that madness.
Leaders have announced the second annual #CHAgives Dayfor Nov. 29 in an effort to increase philanthropic giving amid a season of consumption. The day of giving is a fundraising collaboration between approximately 70 nonprofits and coincides with the national #GivingTuesday holiday.
Last year, contributions totaled more than $100,000 on a single day. That goal has been increased to $250,000.

#CHAgives Day is a collaboration between Causeway, United Way of Greater Chattanooga and the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga.
“While the amount of money raised matters, what might be even more important is the number of people who gave, because every single person saw that every single dollar can make an impact,”said Abby Garrison, Causeway’s executive director.
How to give
The website lists specific areas of giving, such as education, environment, animals, arts and culture, and veterans. Each heading directs users to organizations that would benefit from donations.
Once a donation has been made-of any amount-citizens are urged to share their philanthropy on social media using the hashtags #CHAgives and #GivingTuesday. Another way to promote your giving is the #UNselfie, a single photo with a written statement about the reason you’re giving.

Many local restaurants are also participating in the day of giving. Each of the restaurants is paired up with a nonprofit, and a percentage of sales Nov. 29 will go toward that charity.
Can’t decide where to give? Causeway and United Way have established a #GivingTuesday fund. Every dollar will be given to local organizations that will put your money to work.
Volunteer opportunities are also available for those who would rather give time than money.
