From what I can gather, in order for a song to be the defining song of the summer, it needs to be catchy, bright, infectious and ubiquitous. Last year's megahits included "Can't Stop the Feeling!" by Justin Timberlake, "No Problems" by Chance the Rapper and "One Dance" by Drake.
In 2013, Pharrell's "Happy"—which went from "Aww, that's cute!" to "Where's a fork I can jam into my ear?"—became a standout track, as did the skeezy Robin Thicke collaboration with Pharrell and T.I. on "Blurred Lines." How could you forget OMI's "Cheerleader" from 2015?
As the summer months approach, several songs are on the mainstream radar to become the "song of the summer" for 2017. Early contenders include Lorde's "Green Light," a song that hits the Kate Bush "Hounds of Love" nostalgia buttons hard. If "Royals" can do it, "Green Light can." And I think it's a better song.
Billboard has also released a list of predictions with plenty of crowd-pleasers.
I thought I'd offer some sleepers of my own below. None of these songs will top the Billboard charts anytime soon, but I think they've got a "summer" sound.
