UTC’s new vice chancellor and director of athletics is 22-year veteran Mark Wharton.

“His expertise in fundraising and extensive experience at a number of institutions fit perfectly with the needs of our athletic programs,” Chancellor Steve Angle said in an email.

Wharton spent the past four years as the associate athletics director for development at Penn State University, where he was a member of the Nittany Lions’ senior management team, overseeing all aspects of athletics development.

“He helped bring in $38 million in total cash and support at Penn State, including $17.35 million in annual fund donations, while serving as oversight for wrestling and men’s basketball,” Angle said.

At Penn State, he also served with the executive committee for the departmental strategic plan, facilities master plan committee and communication committee, and he developed revenue generation plans for the athletics department leadership team, according to the chancellor’s email.

Wharton replaces David Blackburn, who resigned earlier this summer.
