In two months, more than 1,000 local people have purchased “In God We Trust” vehicle registration plates.

In July and August, 1,137 Hamilton County vehicle owners got the plates, Hamilton County Clerk Bill Knowles announced Friday.

The state law regarding the plates specifies a one-time extra $2 fee when renewing a current registration or receiving a new plate at the time of title application, Knowles said in a prepared statement.

Once the $2 fee is paid, the plate is renewed in the office annually for the standard renewal fee of $29.

The new plate doesn’t require higher fees, as other specialty plates do, according to archives.

In May, Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill that created the new plates with the phrase. The original legislation would have required the phrase to be on all plates, but the attorney general raised constitutional concerns about that, according to The Associated Press.

So the bill’s sponsors made the new design optional.
