Former UTC student and National Football League wide receiver Terrell Owens recently shared with consumer website NerdWallet some of his hard-learned financial lessons.

Owens, who played for 15 years and made at least $80 million, has been open about his past financial struggles. Click here for a 2012 GQ article that discusses the topic.

In this week’s NerdWallet piece, Owens shares five pieces of advice others may be able to learn from.

For example, he said it’s important to be in control of your own money, even if you have someone else helping you manage it.
