Former City Council member Yusuf Hakeem announced he will seek the District 28 state House seat that JoAnne Favors is vacating when her term is up.

Hakeem made the announcement on WDEF News 12 Now’s show “Point of View.”

The former District 9 City Council member, who lost to Demetrus Coonrod in the 2017 election, said he’s motivated to run to continue the work Favors has done, according to a news release.

The district includes parts of downtown, Alton Park and Brainerd.

Updated at 3:40 p.m. on March 22 to correct a factual error. Hakeem is running for the State House seat, not State Senate as originally reported.
