Several holiday-themed events are scheduled for McKamey Animal Center through the end of the month.
Name Your Price Adoption Day Friday encourages guests to adopt animals from the shelter prior to the holidays. And next week, the center will host a holiday pet portrait event for a $5 donation.
The annual event, a Black Friday tradition, will be from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Similar to REI’s #OptOutside campaign, which encourages people to avoid malls and celebrate the outdoors, McKamey’s Black Friday adoption special urges locals to celebrate with their own pets or shelter pets.
“There are so many ways you can celebrate Pet Friday,” said Jamie McAloon, McKamey’s executive director. “You can go for a walk, run, hike, read a book with your pet or just take a nap.”
Currently, McKamey has over 300 animals available for adoption. McAloon said Thanksgiving can be a stressful time for families but that nothing reduces stress like the “gentle purr of a cat or the snuggling wet nose of a dog.”
All animals available for adoption will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
The first 25 guests through the door will receive a goody bag.

As part of McKamey’s inaugural tree lighting party, pet owners can get photos made with Santa and his elves from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 30.
In addition to photos, guests can enjoy a concert of holiday carols, participate in an ugly sweater contest (for dogs) and join in the celebration as the center’s tree is illuminated at 7:30 p.m.
A virtual ugly sweater contest for cats will begin Friday on McKamey’s Facebook page.
