After four seasons as McCallie School varsity basketball coach, John Shulman made the decision to step away from coaching to pursue other opportunities and spend more time with family, officials announced Wednesday.

Shulman explained his decision in this prepared statement:

Coaching at McCallie and being a part of this community has been an amazing experience for my entire family. The boys I have coached have been amazing to work with, and the school prepares them to be men of excellence in whatever they do. I have sent my three boys to McCallie, so Amy and I know first hand about what an amazing place McCallie is. While I feel it is time for me to look for other challenges in my career and focus on other priorities in my life, my dedication to McCallie will continue.

Shulman is also the former UTC men’s basketball coach.

He will not be taking another coaching position, but he will look for new challenges and opportunities in athletics, according to a news release.

“John’s dedication to success has transformed the basketball program at McCallie,” Headmaster Lee Burns said in a prepared statement. “Under his leadership, the team has had phenomenal success on the court, but just as importantly the boys have learned skills that will help them be good and productive men for the rest of their lives.”

During his time at McCallie, Shulman compiled an overall record of 100-32 with an appearance in the TSSAA Division II-AA state championship game, the state semifinals and numerous championship victories in basketball tournaments across the South.
