The matriarch of a political dynasty died last week. She was 92.
Meacham, who won a Pulitzer for his biography of Barbara Bush’s husband George H.W. Bush, told a story about how he was once mistaken for John Grisham.
As Barbara Bush responded, Meacham was expecting some motherly love, he told the crowd at the Houston funeral.
“How do you think poor John Grisham would feel?” Barbara Bush said, according to Meacham’s speech. “He’s a very handsome man.”
The crowd laughed, and Meacham continued.
“It was a fair and funny point, as were so many of the points that Barbara Pierce Bush made in her long and consequential life,” he also said.
He continued and described her as “candid and comforting, steadfast and straightforward.”
