After more than 900 wins and 40 years in the business, UTC women’s basketball coach Jim Foster announced Tuesday he’s retiring.
“On one side, [UTC’s] program is where I feel comfortable,” Foster said in a prepared statement. “On the other, both my sons expressed interest in hanging out with me more often. [My wife Donna has] moved three or four times for me. It’s time to do something for her.”
Foster recently concluded his 40th year as an NCAA Division I head women’s basketball coach. He spent five seasons guiding UTC student-athletes to success on and off the court. He recently told Nooga.com he gets much of his fulfillment by helping students outside of the gym.
His career included stops at St. Joseph’s, Vanderbilt and Ohio State.
Under Foster, UTC won four straight SoCon regular season and tournament titles, while advancing to the postseason all five years.
He was named the SoCon Coach of the Year in 2015, leading UTC into the Top-25 with wins over Tennessee and Stanford, according to a news release.
“We are all so appreciative of the work Coach Foster did at UTC,” UTC’s Director of Athletics Mark T. Wharton said in an email to UTC. “Not only did he bring national attention to our university, but he did so with class and dignity that deserves recognition.”
