Hamilton County County Schools explains why Hixson High was locked down

Two students suspended pending a hearing over a gun on a school bus

Friday, September 5, 2008

Danielle Clark, Director of Communications for the Hamilton County Department of Education, says Hixson High School was locked down as a safety precaution Thursday morning, as administrators investigated an incident from earlier in the week. With the conclusion of the investigation today, Hamilton County Schools can now release information pertaining to the lockdown.

Clark says on Thursday morning, a parent called the school with a tip that there was a gun on a school bus Tuesday afternoon. To facilitate the investigation into the allegation, administrators put the school into a modified lockdown, allowing the educational process to continue in the classrooms but limiting student mobility and information exchanges.

“The best security we can have is to have parents and students work with us to keep our schools safe,” Superintendent Dr. Jim Scales said, adding that the faster schools receive information, the faster they can work for an effective resolution. “When we get information about an issue, we can act quickly and move to make sure that all of our students remain safe. That is what happened here.”

Clark says the school investigation concluded Thursday afternoon with two students admitting to exchanging a gun on the bus on Tuesday. Both students were immediately suspended pending the outcome of a Zero Tolerance hearing for possession of a weapon.

The matter was turned over to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for further action Thursday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies conducted an investigation but found the information inconclusive Friday. No students were arrested and no charges will be filed at this time.

Senior Firefighter Josh Burchard pulls the oxygen mask off for a moment on his cat to check for signs of improvement. While most of the cats were successfully revived, one was not expected to survive

Photos and Report by Bruce Garner

Thursday, September 4, 2008

No one was home and no injuries were reported in connection with a house fire late this morning at 3206 12th Avenue. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 11:24 a.m. Upon arrival, the firefighters located the fire in the kitchen on the first floor. The two-story house had reportedly been divided up into three apartment units, two of which were being used.

Though there were no people in the house, there were about 10 cats inside. The firefighters discovered them while extinguishing the fire in the kitchen. Some of the cats got out of the house on their own, while others were showing obvious ill effects from smoke inhalation. The firefighters got out oxygen bottles and used special masks for animals in an effort to revive the cats (see attached photos). The firefighters successfully revived several cats that were injured, but one was not expected to survive.

Battalion Chief Ben Biggs said the fire was contained to the kitchen area, but there was smoke damage to the rest of the apartment unit. The dollar loss was estimated at around $10,000. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the two people who live in the fire-damaged apartment unit.

Captain Lesley Morgan with the Fire Investigation Division said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature, most likely from a cat knocking over an unattended candle in the kitchen.
