A boy and a cigarette lighter leave family looking for another home

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

One adult and six children were forced from their apartment Monday night at 25th Street Place Apartments after one of the children started a fire with a cigarette lighter. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 8:38 p.m. and responded to 2568 4th Avenue with six fire companies. The firefighters located the fire in a bedroom on the second floor. Battalion Chief Winston Shields said the firefighters were able to contain the fire damage to the bedroom. The rest of the apartment unit sustained smoke and water damage. No injuries were reported.

Bruce Garner, CFD spokesman, says the fire displaced a mother and her six children, who ranged in age from 14 months to 8 years old. After a brief talk with the children, Lieutenant Anthony Moore with the Fire Investigation Division got a five-year-old boy to confess that he had been setting paper on fire with a cigarette lighter. No charges will be filed because of the child's age. The dollar loss was estimated at around $12,000.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the family. A representative with the Chattanooga Housing Authority, which runs the apartment complex, told firefighters that they will try to find another apartment unit for the family to move into. Chattanooga police and Hamilton County EMS also provided assistance on the scene.

City woman seriously burned in her East Lake home

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

A 52-year-old woman received serious burns late Monday afternoon when fire broke out in her bedroom.

Chattanooga firefighters responded to the emergency at 3610 4th Avenue shortly after 5:00 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, they found an oxygen machine was on fire in the front yard. Captain David Barie with Engine 9 said a smoldering set of box springs and mattress were also in the front yard. All of the burning materials had been carried out by people who were in the house at the time.

When the firefighters went inside the house, they discovered a woman who had been seriously burned. Lieutenant Anthony Moore with the Fire Investigation Division said the woman was on an oxygen machine, but was also smoking cigarettes, which can be a very hazardous combination. Lt. Moore believes the oxygen tubing caught on fire first and then quickly spread to the woman's clothes and bed linens. The woman's husband and daughter put the fire out, but the burns were severe.

The woman was transported to Erlanger Medical Center by Hamilton County EMS with 2nd and 3rd degree burns to her upper torso. Hours later, she was transported to a burn unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where this morning she was listed in critical but stable condition. The cause of the fire will be listed as accidental.

They always say it will be sent in the next 7-10 business days, Or they say I haven't completed my paperwork.

I have filled out everything I have received and even faxed it to them. When I called the company about the papers I faxed they told me that their fax machine was broken! I want to cancel my order and get my money back. When I explain this to the company they say no, they will only give me store credit. If they would have sent the merchandise I wouldn't have complained but they are taking my money and refusing to send anything.I don't want store credit because they haven't even sent the items I've paid for.

I have spent over $800 so far. Our family still doesn't have a computer. Had the company never called our house with this offer, I would have bought an affordable computer at another store. Our family would have a computer and money wouldn't continue to be stolen from our bank account every week.
