Two juveniles shot, injuries not serious

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Police are investigating a double shooting that occurred at 1113 N. Hawthorne Street early this morning in which two juvenile males were shot. Witnesses told police that just after 12 midnight, a black newer model vehicle passed by twice before shooting at people who were outside standing out in front of the location.

One juvenile was shot in the left foot while the other was hit in the right leg as they fled from the gunfire. Both were transported to Erlanger where they were treated.

Sgt. Jerri Weary, Chattanooga Police public information officer, said, "Because of the affiliation of some of the people at the scene and statements made during the investigation, police are looking at gang rivalry as the motivation for the shooting."

There have not yet been any arrests in the case but the investigation will continue.

Two simultaneous home burglaries;
Five caught and jailed the same day

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Officer Rebecca Royval, Chattanooga Police PIO, says around 11:40 a.m. today, a Chattanooga Police Property Crimes investigator saw several black males climbing through a window at a 2300 North Chamberlain Avenue home. As he approached, the three fled on foot. One suspect, Darius Jamehl Oates, age 32, was quickly captured.

The other two suspects, both juveniles, managed to get away from the investigator but he had already radioed for additional officers who arrived in the area in a minute or two and spotted the two younger suspects. In a matter of few minutes, the officers captured the remaining two suspects and transported them to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center.

Oates was transported to the Hamilton County jail. All three suspects were charged with aggravated burglary.

About the same time as the incident on North Chamberlain was unfolding, officers in the Brainerd area responded to 4619 Montview Drive after neighbors there called 911 about suspicious activity and a possible burglary in progress.

A neighbor saw the suspicious looking men leave before police arrived and called in a description of their car.

Officers spotted the car in the 3900 block of Rodgers Road. When the suspects saw the officers coming, they fled on foot. Officers quickly caught the two suspects, Derrick Carnes, age 27 and Eddie Collins, age 26, after receiving calls from citizens about the suspicious looking men running through the neighborhood.

Suspect Carnes confessed to the burglary at 4619 Montview Drive and one at 122 Shawnee Trail. He was charged with two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of theft and one count of vandalism.

Officer Royval says the stolen property from both residences was recovered. She says more charges may still be pending against all of today's captured suspects.

Other magnet schools in the area like the one my children attend have taken the same demographic and made it work having just as good if not better than Normal Park who has gone about it the absolute wrong on every level way. I hope the Normal Parkers LOOSE and have to allow the all kids living in that area the chance to go there. I could go on about this all day.. Its just wrong on every level.. I hope they get eaten for lunch.. yuppy fcks!!! ---- AB

I'm not gonna mention were I live but I will say there's no way in hell my child is going to the public schools I'm zoned for. I'm having to sacrifice thousands of dollars I don't have and drive way out of my way so my child can go to a good school. A large majority of the parenting in this town plain sucks. Kids bringing guns to school, Teachers being charged with child molestation the list go on and on. These parents seriously need to be held punishable for there kids actions. Try placing mom and dad in a jail cell with there kid for 48 HRs and then see who getting there ass spanked! What's next!! What's next!! What's next!!! ---- MC

Speak to those families who live in the Appalachia region, and then see if driving far seems so bad. ---- Raul Duke Jr.

Someone sure has some passionate feelings about a school that your children do not attend and know nothing about. I am a single parent (with no money I might add) and I live in Hixson. My child has attended Normal Park for the last 6 years due to the lottery that you of course say does not work. Due to the lottery, I am able to have my child attend a wonderful school that is 2 blocks from where I work rather than the poor excuse of a school for which he is zoned. Speaking of zones....I am not sure that NPMM is the one that chooses the zones...I believe that is the school board and Hamilton County officials. ---- NK

Guthrie sentenced to 11 months & 29 days involving a 2008 traffic related death

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

A criminal court case in Judge Rebecca Sterns courtroom yesterday resulted in Trevor Guthrie, age 42, pleading guilty to providing alcohol to minors and receiving a sentence of 11 months & 29 days. He was taken into custody immediately.

Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Janet Atkinson says the plea is the result of a traffic crash that took place on February 3, 2008 in the 9800 block of East Brainerd road at around 6:18 a.m. The crash was investigated by traffic investigator Todd Cook with the HCSO. The incident involved a single-vehicle and the investigation showed that the vehicle was being operated by Ley Meredith Birmingham, age 17, and the passenger/owner was Jonathan Crowe. The driver lost control in a curve and left the roadway, striking a utility pole on the driver's side The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was flown by Life Force to Erlanger in critical condition.

As the investigation progressed, Investigator Cook found that both Birmingham and Crowe had been at the residence of Trevor Guthrie who lives in Ringgold, Georgia just a short distance from the crash location. The investigation also provided information that Guthrie purchased alcohol for Ley Birmingham and knew that both parties had been drinking when they left his residence. It was also found that other juveniles were at the Guthrie residence that night and they also had been provided alcohol by Guthrie.

Ms. Atkinson said, "The successful conclusion to this case is due to the experience and professionalism of Traffic Investigator Todd Cook and the Traffic Division with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office."

Well maybe Mr. Guthrie did have parties and not check I.D.s at the door, but has anyone looked into Miss Birmingham's past recreational activities? Probably not. That would bring to light her transgressions and those of her parents. Sometimes accepting personal responsibility is not possible in the face of a loss. I feel bad that their daughter is gone, but that doesn't really mean it's altogether this man's fault. Now that his life is ruined, is it going to bring the girl back? Nope. ---- J

J..Shame on you! You heartless <deleted>! It does not matter what that child did wrong in her past. It is irrelevant what her parents may or may not have done before this. What is on the table is this child was killed after being served alcohol at the home of an adult. She is dead. Do you get that!? Yes she was old enough to know better BUT we all know that kids her age don't make smart choices. Thats where the adults come in. It was HIS responsability to make sure children were not served alcohol. Thats common sense and any adult should know what the outcome could (and was in this case) be. I pray that your child, your niece or nephew is better protected by adults decisions that this child was so that you never have to feel the pain that so many felt when she died. And I think this guy should get FAR more than 11/29 .... <deleted> ---- BAL

I do understand that she is dead and I am not heartless. I also understand that bad decisions were made by an adult & a child that had bad outcomes. My point, however, is this: she partied a lot. If she hadn't been at Mr. Guthrie's house, she would have been somewhere else, anywhere else. It is a bit overboard to "go after" the world when she was seeking out alcohol and who knows what else regularly. I am not perfect and wasn't a perfect teenager, but I was responsible for the actions I took that got me into whatever trouble came along. For some reason, the Good Lord saw me through it without me getting myself killed. And yes, my parents felt responsible. They didn't blame anyone but themselves and me. Period. ---- J

As I see it J its great that you made it through. Probably because someone looked after you a bit as a young adult. Unfortunately she didnt have the same privilage as you with this guy. Plus its fantastic that God saw fit to see you through your bad decisions. Whats sad is that you truly believe that. The statement alone says that God sees some lucky ones through and doesnt extend the same for others. Your placing blame on a child who should have had better guidance. Your misguided...thats really sad. Whats more sad is that you dont see that......nuff said... ---- J Harvey

Previously fire damaged house catches fire again

Photos by Daniel Hague

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Daniel Hague says round 10:50 p.m. Saturday night, the Hamilton County 911 center received numerous calls about a structure fire in the 8000 block of Shallowford Road. Due to the close proximity of the Chattanooga City Limits, both the Chattanooga Fire Department and the Tri-Community Fire Departments were dispatched. On arrival, it was determined that the fire was located at 8012 Shallowford Road inside the city limits of Chattanooga. Firefighters from Quint 8 reported a fully involved structure fire.

Hague says the structure had been vacant since a previous fire in December and the decision was made to fight the fire in a "defensive" nature. Large hose streams were used from the outside of the structure since the house had significant damage from the previous fire and considered too unsafe to enter.

Hague says vehicular traffic on Shallowford Road between Jenkins Road and Ranch Hills Road had to be closed due to fire hoses being stretched across the roadway.

Firefighters from Quint 8, Quint 13, Quint 21, and Squad 3 fought the fire for approximately 30 minutes until the fire was declared under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chattanooga Fire Department, Fire Investigation.

No injuries were reported and no estimate of damages was made due to the previous fire.

The Chattanooga Fire Department was assisted by the Chattanooga Police Department, Hamilton County EMS and the Electric Power Board.

Hamilton County property tax records show the owner of the property as Pinnacle Point Partners LLC.

Child struck by pickup truck in
East Ridge critically hurt

Saturday, March 6, 2010

This afternoon, Saturday, around 4:21 p.m., East Ridge Police and Fire/Rescue responded to the 5300 block of Lazard Street to reports of a child having been struck by a vehicle.

East Ridge Public Safety PIO Erik Hopkins says the first officer arrived on the scene in three minutes to find a 9-year-old boy laying the roadway. The boy had been riding a scooter when he was struck by a Chevrolet 1500 pick up truck.

The driver of the pickup truck, Mandi Hutsell, age 23, of Ringgold, GA was traveling west on Lazard when she struck the child.

The boy was transported to T.C. Thompson's Children's Hospital by Lifeguard EMS in apparent critical condition.

East Ridge Traffic Investigators have charged Ms. Hutsell with reckless driving. She is scheduled to be in East Ridge Municipal Court on May 11th at 5 p.m.

I don't know the details in this case. However, I do see kids playing in the street on scooters, skate boards, etc. and NOT watching or listening for vehicles. We have had to completely stop our car---with parents watching---for the child to realize he was scooting straight toward us.....and finally move over. Parents did not seem to think there was a problem! ---- BG

I agree with the above statement by -BG. The street behind my house in East Brainerd is full of kids (about 15 kids within one block). I will do the speed limit (10mph or less) and they ride bikes, play basketball, walking, etc. in the middle of the street. When I come down the street and I might add that my truck has a legal loud exhaust system which can be heard far away, they will not move I honk and nearly take out their handle bars with my mirror.I have to swrive 3 or 4 times to get around them. Then I look on every porch and yard, no parents in sight!! and these are prodomiantly afican-american kids ages from 4-12 years old. My neighbor who drives a Harley has told me they even roll basketballs in front him to get him to wreck. What has happened to parenting these days? I do realize in this case the driver was cited for reckless driving which would be a different situation if the driver was actually speeding or was it just another - blame the driver because a kid on a scooter would never drive unsafe - Other questions, was this a motorized scooter, was the child wearing a helmet required by law at that age? Parents, please keep your kids playing in the yards and not the streets. ---- billy

I agree with all that. But on this street that the child was hit on people use it as a cut thru and they fly up and down the road. Not only was she driving way to fast she was also on the wrong side of the road. People need to realize that these back roads are where kids do play and they need to slow down and pay attantion! ---- JH

UM, do you retards not get the concept that a moving vehicle is slightly more dangerous than a child on a scooter? Or do you realize that they are F`n CHILDREN!? When did accountability go to hell in a easter basket? YOUR an ADULT! Your supposed to be smarter than the kids in the street. If you see them dont assume they will do the right thing. YOU have to do the right thing. Thats what makes YOU the adult....GEEZ! ---- BAL

Too bad all these tough guys and girls aren't going into the military and sent to Afghanistan and Iraq where their real talents can be put to use. All I see is time and money being wasted on people that will likely do little more than breed more dregs of society. --- totalimagephoto

Fight at East Ridge High results in student tased

Friday, March 5, 2010

This afternoon around 12:46 East Ridge Police patrol and tactical officers responded to East Ridge High School at 4340 Bennett Road after the school resource officer radioed for backup from more officers.

The SRO had been summoned to the area of the school's gymnasium on a reported fight between two female students. When the SRO arrived, a teacher was attempting to break up the fight and was being assaulted by one of the students involved. The SRO in an attempt to protect the teacher fired a taser. A third female student, who was not involved in the original fight, was attempting to help the teacher, stepped into the path of the taser's dart and was accidentally tased.

The 17-year-old female student who was tased was treated at the scene by fire rescue first responders, and then transported to Park Ridge Hospital by LifeGuard EMS for evaluation.

East Ridge Public Safety PIO Erik Hopkins says the student tased was identified by both the SRO and school officials as a good student and not part of the fight but was just trying to assist. No other injuries were reported.

The two students involved in the fight were taken into custody and charged with assault and disorderly conduct. The 17-year-old female student was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center. The 18-year-old female student, identified as Dearia M. Higgins, was transported to the Hamilton County Jail. She is due to be in East Ridge Municipal Court on Tuesday, March 30th, at 5 p.m.
