The winner will receive $1,000 and a headlining spot as a part of the Nightfall concert series, which runs from May 2 through Aug. 29.
The final competition will be held March 21.
During the series of five live shows at Rhythm & Brews, a variety of local bands will play a three- to four-song set of no more than 15 minutes. Seven bands will compete each evening, with the winner being chosen by a popular vote from attendees.
A panel of professionals in the music industry will be on hand at the final performance and will determine which band will headline Nightfall.
Last year’s grand prizewinners wereAmber Fults and the Ambivalent Lovers.
Jonathan Susman is marketing and media director for Chattanooga Presents. He made the decision to add an extra band to each night because of the number of bands interested.
“I’m really excited about the artists that have submitted this year, ” he said. “I think there’s a bunch of cool new bands that are going to come out of this. You’re going to find a lot of fans of one band that are going to discover new, local talent in another band they didn’t realize existed.”
But Susman said he sees Road to Nightfall as less of a competition and more of an opportunity for the music community.
“It’s never really been about the competition,” he said. “It’s always been about exposing the audience to new bands and exposing the bands to each other, sharing audiences and creating camaraderie with musicians.”
