MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Boyd-Buchanan boys basketball team suffered a 72-54 loss to Booker T. Washington High School in Wednesday’s Division I Class A state quarterfinal at MTSU’s Murphy Center.

The Buccaneers (28-4), led by senior Hall Allen’s team-high 14 points and five assists, strung together seven unanswered in the game’s opening minute. The Memphis-based Warriors withstood the early flurry, though, but Boyd still managed to maintain the lead for much of the first half.

Booker T. Washington (27-7), which advances to face Meigs County in Friday’s Class A semifinal, tied things at 27-27 on a pair of second-quarter free throws from Derwin Fitch. A litte over a minute later, the Warriors claimed their first lead of the contest, edging in front on Angelo Smith’s 3-pointer with 1:52 left, and they led 28-27 at the break.

Justus McMillan and Zach Jenkins sunk back-to-back baskets to give Boyd a one-point lead early in the third quarter, but B.T. Washington responded with a 7-0 run, seizing a 37-31 advantage at the 4:29 mark.

By the end of the third, the Warriors-aided by Jamarcus Franklin’s 16 free throws-had stretched it to double digits.

The Bucs, who shot an impressive 48 percent from the field, were never able catch up after that, as their deficit grew steadily in the final period, eventually reaching 18 on Beason’s two free throws in the final minute.

McMillan finished with 11 points and five rebounds for Boyd, while seniors Jeremiah Nason and Zach Jenkins combined for 17 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.

In addition to Beason’s team-leading 22-point effort, the Warriors also received strong scoring performances from Franklin (20) and Smith (17), while Fitch tallied eight points and 10 rebounds in the win.
