The Chattanooga wrestling team managed three points on Day 1 of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, as juniors Nick Soto and Corey Mock each posted wins to remain alive in the consolation brackets.

Competition resumes Friday at 11 a.m. for the Mocs, who dropped four one-point decisions on Thursday.

Soto, the 10th seed at 133 pounds, opened with a 9-5 decision over Oregon State’s Joey Palmer, setting up a second-round bout with Purdue’s Cashé Quiroga, who Soto defeated 10-8 back in December.

Soto grabbed a 2-0 advantage with his first-period takedown, but Quiroga battled back in the action-packed second period, which included a pair of takedowns and an escape from the All-American Boilermaker. Soto, however, still held a 7-5 edge after two escapes, a reversal and a penalty point, but the Quiroga managed an escape and takedown with 48 seconds left to secure an 8-7 victory.

Mock, the No. 10 seed at 165, cruised to a 9-1 major decision over Navy’s Peyton Walsh, leading to a Southern Conference Championship rematch with The Citadel’s Turtogtokh Luvsandorj in Round 2. Luvsandorj won the regular-season matchup between the two, but Mock took the SoCon title on March 8.

Thursday’s match was just as close, but Luvsandorj came out on top this time. A first-period takedown and two back points was all the offense Luvsandorj needed. Mock scored on a pair of stalling penalties and held the riding time advantage, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Chattanooga’sAlex Hudson (157),Levi Clemons(174) andDawson Peck (285)were all eliminated with two losses.

Mock returns to action Friday against Iowa’s fifth-seeded Nick Moore, while Soto opens with Northern Illinois’ Nick Smith. Each match can be seen on ESPN3, while live scoring is available at
