The annual Mainx24 festival is scheduled for Dec. 5, and organizers are encouraging local chili masters to sign up to compete in one of the marquee events.

The World Heavyweight Chili Championship returns for the seventh year, and registration is now open for teams wanting to compete for the title. Click here for registration information.

Tennessee Solar Solutionsare the defending champions, but organizers are encouraging new teams to participate this year.

“We love to see teams just having fun at this event,” said event organizer Dawn Hjelseth of GreenSpaces. “We give out awards not only for Judge’s Choice, but for People’s Choice and Most Spirit … Bribery for public votes and heckling [are] highly encouraged as well.”

Teams are asked to prepare 5 gallons of chili for sampling, and the recipe can vary wildly. In years past, teams have served everything from vegan cashew chili to traditional meat and bean mixtures.

Just want to eat the chili? The event is open to the public with an all-you-can-eat option for $8. A commemorative mug and spoon combo will be $15, including the all-you-can-eat chili. Good Dog will also be on-site serving hot dogs.

Proceeds will benefit GreenSpaces. The championship is sponsored by Tennessee Solar Solutions, OCI, Coyote Logistics and Victoria Love Events & Staffing.
